You do something all day long, don’t you? Every one does. If you get up at seven o’clock and go to bed at eleven, you have put in sixteen good hours, and it is certain with most people, that they have been doing something all the time. They have been either walking, or reading, or writing, or thinking. The only trouble is that they do it about a great many things and I do it about one. If they took the time in question and applied it in one direction, to one object, they would succeed. Success is sure to follow such application. The trouble lies in the fact that people do not have an object, one thing, to which they stick, letting all else go. Success is the product of the severest kind of mental and physical application.

Socrates "Triple Filter Test"

One day an acquaintance met the great philosopher and said:“Socrates, do you know what I just heard about your friend?” “Hold on a minute,” Socrates replied. “Before telling me anything I’d like you to pass a little test. It’s called the Triple Filter Test." ”Triple filter test?“ the man asked. ”That’s right,“ Socrates continued. ”Before you talk to me about my friend, it might be a good idea to take a moment and filter what you're going to say. The first filter is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?“ ”No,“ the man said, ”actually I just heard about it and...“ ”All right,“ said Socrates. ”So you don’t really know if it’s true or not. Now let’s try the second filter, the filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my friend something good?“ ”No, on the contrary…“ the man replied. ”So,“ Socrates continued, ”you want to tell me something bad about him, but you’re not certain it’s true. You may still pass the test though, because there’s one filter left: the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my friend going to be useful to me?“ “Probably not,” the man replied. ”Well,“ concluded Socrates, ”if what you want to tell me is neither true nor good nor even useful, why tell it to me at all?“

Times of Contradiction

We have larger houses, but smaller families,more comfort, but less time.We have more education, but less understanding,more knowledge, but less insight,more experts, but more problems,more medicine, but less good health We have reached the moon,but we have problems crossing the streetto meet our new neighbors. We invent more and more powerful computersand produce more and more information,for which more paper is consumed than ever before,but there is less communication in our lives. We get more and more in terms of quantity,but less and less in terms of quality.These are the times of fast food and bad digestion,of inflated egos, but little personality,of high profits, but superficial friendship. These are the times of showing offwith no substantial background.
